2023 Recap: Celebrating a Year of Achievements

MC Staff Hector Campos, Kyle Gugel, Robin LLewellyn, Ashika Raval, Katelyn Lowrey, Chelsea Hartness, and Sunjit Khamba at Texas Nonprofit Summit 2023

As 2024 looms on the horizon, let’s recap this year’s highlights, shall we?

Mission Capital revamped and reworked many of our courses and workshops with the help of our community advisors and participants, we survived one of the hottest summers in recorded history and joined numerous other nonprofits at the 2023 Texas Nonprofit Summit. Can you believe that isn’t even half of it? Amidst all the victories and broken air conditioners, Mission Capital has been hard at work refining our offerings and growing as an organization.

Here are some of 2023 favorite moments from MC staff!

Robin LLewellyn - Senior Manager, Consulting

We updated all of our Mission Capital workshops this year and added some new offerings, including Leading Diverse Teams, and Creating Equitable Workplace Experiences. We will continue to make changes, but I’m proud that we undertook the time-consuming work of completely redoing the curricula to center equity and better relate information.

It was all made worth it by some feedback we’ve received from participants, who said these changes were not only helpful but transformative. Some of the organizations contacted us afterward and said they are incorporating the skills learned into their weekly meetings.

Kyle Gugel - Consultant - Consulting, Leadership & Learning

This year, we worked with The Other Ones Foundation. They have a great mission and program, and we enjoyed working with them to make their executive transition smoother. We invited a mixture of board and staff to the process, including the person who would be reporting to the position they were hiring for. So many voices in the room may seem daunting, but actually, it makes for a better workplace environment and employee retention rate when the position is filled.

Sunjit Khamba - Senior Consultant - Consulting, Leadership & Learning

We’re so proud of our WeThrive workshop series. Co-led by Meme Styles and Sunjit Khamba, WeThrive is a brave space where nonprofit leaders of color come to develop their story and authentically share it with the support of a village of other BIPOC leaders.

With WeThrive tools and the support of her fellows, participant Shane Woods was able to take her personal experience and use it to show the importance of her non-profit, Girlstart. Shane had this to say about the impact WeThrive had on her ability to advocate for GirlStart:

I am constantly telling the story of Girlstart. In four WeThrive meetings with Meme and Sunjit, I honed that story and saw how to tailor it best to fit the audience in front of me.

Chelsea Hartness - Collective Impact Senior Manager - Good Measure

This year at Good Measure, we were honored and excited to collaborate with six different organizations to create Decolonizing Wealth, where we invited author Edgar Villanueva to talk about philanthropic change. Edgar Villanueva founded The Decolonizing Wealth Project and our community of funders and philanthropists found the information not only staggering but inspiring. That’s a win in my book!
