Member Moment: Celebrating Austin’s Nonprofits at SXSW

SXSW is upon us, and with that, comes lots of opportunities to celebrate all that is Austin. Our nonprofit community is an integral part of who we are as a city, so it’s only fitting SXSW showcases and celebrates the innovative and impactful work of the nonprofits and community leaders dedicated to improving our city.

The Movement Towards and Inclusive Austin Recap

Throughout SXSW, many Mission Capital members will speak at social impact panels or meetups to share their expertise. On March 6, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation presented The Movement Towards an Inclusive Austin featuring Mission Capital members, IDEA Public Schools, Breakthrough Austin, and Goodwill Industries, and moderated by Charley Scarborough, Mission Capital SVP and Business Partner.

Panelists shared how they’re increasing access to education for students and adult learners by measuring data, creating wraparound support and serving in areas where resources currently do not exist. The discussion emphasized the importance of building strong connections across our community, and how those connections serve as an integral step towards inclusion.

"When we look at what's next, we're expanding our work to include other organizations and form deep partnerships in the community. It takes community and connections to achieve our goals. We're reflecting on what's working now, and what we should do in the future." - Zakiyyah Kareem, Breakthrough Austin

The SXSW Community Service Awards

Showcasing our nonprofit community doesn't stop there! The SXSW Community Service Awards recognize six individuals and six organizations for their commitment to developing solutions to challenges facing Central Texas. Organizations nominated include Mission Capital members Allies Against Slavery, Creative Action, Jeremiah Program, Kids in a New Groove and Urban Roots.

“SXSW is known for highlighting innovation from all over the globe, but we recognize that there’s pioneering work with great impact being done right here in Austinyear-round. We believe local organizations can benefit from, and should be a part of SXSW programming. That’s where the inspiration for the SXSW Community Service Awards and grant program came from – the desire to honor innovative people and organizations that contribute to a vibrant Austin community, and the larger SXSW community.” - Tammy Lynn Gilmore, SXSW Senior Conference Programmer and Non-Profit Grant Specialist

This unique opportunity to celebrate the spirit of Austin gives our community a chance to come together and recognize the people and organizations at the forefront of social change. All are welcome to join!
