Last week, the top three organizations providing oversight and leadership to the nonprofit sector made some powerful history by jointly penning an open letter to all donors in America, and frankly it was received here at Greenlights as a breath of fresh air! At Greenlights, we’ve been encouraging funders and the general public for years to stop evaluating nonprofits based on the narrow percentage of funds that are spent on “programs” versus “administration and fundraising”. Working with hundreds of nonprofits each year, we know that every nonprofit is different and can’t be judged on a one-size-fits-all measure of purported “efficiency”.We also stand with the authors of this letter in recognizing the importance of all nonprofits investing in their own capabilities, infrastructure, professional development, and overall ability to achieve their missions in a sustainable, long-term way. And more donors should as well.
