Position Details:

General Purpose:  The Director of Communications plays an integral role in promoting AHS. The Director of Communications will develop a strategic communications plan for the organization, and will lead and participate in the execution of that plan by overseeing all media and public relations as well as agency branding through all AHS communication outlets.

Essential Functions:

Communications Strategy, Vision and Leadership

  • Develop and implement an integrated, organization-wide strategic communications plan to broaden awareness of AHS and strengthen AHS’ brand identity across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Create a brand/marketing/public relations strategy that will allow AHS executive and volunteer leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media, public officials and key influencers.
  • Engage the community to be part of the solution by participating in organization programs, supporting the mission financially and advocating as a brand ambassador.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the animal welfare sector and AHS. Work with the AHS executives to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
  • Formulate policies and procedures related to public information programs.
  • Work collaboratively to assure a high quality, positive experience of our facility for all visitors.

 

Communications Operations

  • Oversee the continued development and use of the AHS brand.
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, all copy intended for public consumption to ensure its alignment with the strategic communications plan.
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, the development of all print and branded materials.
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, the development of community and donor communications, including AHS’ website, print newsletters & solicitations, weekly email newsletters, email solicitations, donor program materials, brochures, one pagers, animal success stories, advocacy related communication, promotional items, and other electronic communications.
  • Work collaboratively with Development staff to write & design event collateral, including sponsor packets, invitations, programs, etc.
  • Produce high quality videos, PSA’s, and fundraising stories as needed.
  • Oversee individual animal marketing efforts, including creating guidelines for photography, videos, bios, signage and working with volunteers’ in the execution of these efforts.
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, curated content and increase audience engagement on AHS’ social media channels.
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, all advertising including determine advertising strategy, secure advertising space, and work collaboratively with the Graphic & Design Manager to design advertising campaigns.
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed for events, campaigns, tours, etc.
  • Serve as lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization and actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance to animal welfare, as well as AHS’ programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects.
  • Track, monitor and evaluate PR strategies and media impressions.
  • Maintain all income and expenses within budget.
  • Manage relationships with any communications­related vendors or consultants.
  • Represent AHS at speaking engagements, tours, and other events as needed.
  • Pitch and place AHS staff for panels in local, state and nationwide conferences.
  • Generate award entries for AHS across sectors.

 

Advocacy

  • Work with leadership to track advocacy issues at a local, state & national level.
  • Develop & maintain relationships related to advocacy including elected officials and their staff.
  • Work with the Executive Director to develop strategies to address advocacy issues such as written communication, individual meetings, community calls to action, etc.

 

Other

  • Participate in & document rescue and disaster relief efforts as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

  • A minimum of three years of experience in leadership role as well as marketing, public relations, media relations, or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred - degree in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field desired.
  • Experience managing and executing across several communications media.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, required.
  • Willing to execute day­to­day tasks and work both independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Capable leader, manager and coach for AHS executives, volunteer leadership and volunteer talent.
  • Willingness to share own ideas, even amongst senior staff and board members.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and follow through effectively while prioritizing multiple ongoing projects.
  • Excellent organizational skills & attention to detail.
  • Excellent public speaking skills to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong media presence for both television and radio appearances.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with media and the public.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, required.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, required.
  • Experience with Wordpress and/or HTML, preferred.
  • Strong animal handling skills for both dogs and cats.
