Are you a new board member? Do you know what is expected of board members? This session will demystify boards and their functions. It will also address the main roles, responsibilities, and expectations of board members.

As a Senior Manger for the Consulting team at Mission Capital, Robin brings her experience in talent and leadership development, and human resources, as well as her TTI Success Insights12 Driving Forces®, DISC, and Emotional Quotient certifications, to our learning and consulting engagements. She utilizes her theater arts background to facilitate interactive trainings, focusing on learning through “play.”

Driving Impact Together: An Insightful Conversation about Board Leadership in Austin

Learn from peers and colleagues in the field of board service. Representatives from all areas of board service will participate, including new and long-term nonprofit board members and leaders, as well as a corporate partner with staff who serve on boards.

Listen in as they engage in a lively and informative discussion on the power of board service and board engagement. It will be an opportunity to hear from those who are serving and those who benefit from their board member's service.

Monica Maldonado Williams

Monica Maldonado Williams is the manager of strategic partnerships for UFCU where she supports UFCU’s community relationships to improve the financial health of the underserved. Monica is the co-founder of The New Philanthropists, a nonprofit with a mission to increase the diversity of community leadership. She also is on the board for Breakthrough Central Texas and serves on the steering committees of Central Texas Asset Funders Network, the Mayor’s Corporate Engagement Council, and the Cornerstone DE Society.

Monica’s background is in communications and marketing, having been a director at several nonprofits, including the Austin Community Foundation and Austin Opera. She is also the founder and director of GivingCity Austin, a multichannel media company sold in 2020 that covered Austin’s philanthropic and civic sectors. She is a first-generation college graduate with a degree from Southwestern University, and has lived in Austin for 25 years with her husband and their two teenagers. 

PANELISTS:

Manuel Gonzalez, Ph.D.

Dr. Manny Gonzalez currently serves as Director of Regional Operations for Western Governors University, overseeing strategic initiatives and educational partnerships in the South Region, spanning Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. Dr. Gonzalez holds degrees from Trinity University and the University of Texas at Austin, including a Ph.D. in Education Leadership & Policy. Actively involved in the community, Dr. Gonzalez was re-elected to the Austin Community College District Board of Trustees in November 2022 and currently serves as Board Secretary.

Dr. Gonzalez also serves on the board of directors for Leadership Austin (chair-elect), the Austin 2030 Network (co-chair), and Friends of the Children-Austin. In his free time, Dr. Gonzalez enjoys family time, coaching his sons' little league teams at Town & Country, volunteering at Pond Springs Elementary PTA, and searching for the best taco and coffee spots across town.

Christopher Rios

Christopher Rios joined Wells Fargo in 2022 and is currently serving as Regional Vice President of Philanthropy and Community Impact for Central and West Texas markets as well as state-wide initiatives. He oversees non-profit and community partnerships that focus on the Wells Fargo Foundation’s strategic pillars of Affordable Housing, Small Business Growth, Financial Empowerment, and Environmental Sustainability.

Active in the community, he currently serves on the Board of Directors for Austin Habitat for Humanity, Thinkery Children’s Museum, Austin Film Society, and as an advisory board member to Huston Tillotson University’s School of Business and Technology. 

Veronda Durden

Veronda Durden joined Any Baby Can as President and Chief Executive Officer in 2018. With a focus on child development and family health, Any Baby Can partners with parents to identify tools and resources, so children reach their full potential. Any Baby Can's mission aligned with Veronda's desire to provide quality services and resources to vulnerable populations. As former Commissioner of the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), she provided leadership for a statewide staff responsible for ensuring Texans with disabilities and children with developmental delays pursue independent and productive lives. As Any Baby Can expands to meet the growing needs of Central Texans, Veronda proactively leads the organization in providing programs and services to families that impact their ability to reach their highest potential. She is a strong leader who enjoys building resilient high-performing teams and watching them excel.

Alex Cantu

Alex is a community advocate, philanthropist, and nonprofit leader. He is currently the Board Chair of VELA, a board member of Open Door Preschools, and a steering committee member for the Hispanic Impact Fund. As the Chief Operating Officer with MAYA Consulting, he is focused on creating equitable systems to ensure a diverse and inclusive workplace can thrive. During his tenure, MAYA has tripled its revenue and headcount, achieved the Best Place for Working Parents distinction, and was recognized by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce with the Small Business Excellence Award.
